Time For U.S. Ambassador To Turkiye Barrack To Align Protocol Wordsmiths At The White House And Department Of State
Thomas Barrack, United States Ambassador to the Republic of Turkiye (2025- ), has a reputation for appreciating the significance of history, pride, protocol, and respect in successful interactions with heads of state and heads of government who are Muslim, followers of Islam.
Thus, surprising the dissonance among protocol wordsmiths within the Trump-Vance Administration (2025-2029) given the importance Donald Trump, President of the United States (2017-2021 and 2025-2029), places upon bilateral optics.
About Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of the Republic of Turkiye (2014-2028), President Trump previously remarked “He is a very good friend of mine, and we have worked together very well. I love him. The White House did not receive a memorandum that Turkey had reverted to Turkiye on 1 June 2022. From The White House livestream portal on 7 July 2026:

On the same day, the United States Department of State wrote in a statement “Today, on the margins of the NATO Summit in Ankara, Türkiye, the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio…”
The United States Department of State has also adopted a hybrid approach when referencing Turkiye by using “Turkey (Türkiye)” when mentioning the country.

Following an official letter [1 June 2022] submitted to the United Nations by the Republic of Türkiye, the country's name has been officially changed to Türkiye at the UN. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that a letter had been received on June 1 from the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavuşoğlu addressed to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, requesting the use of “Türkiye” instead of “Turkey” for all affairs. The spokesman said the country name change became effective from the moment the letter was received.”
